The Shanghai Sports Bureau has set a new goal of bringing more space to the city dedicated for exercise by 2020 (like the hip plans planned for Pudong new area) with the end goal being to eventually have enough space for every citizen to have access to 2.4 sqm of sports facilities. Talk about room to move!
Spending more than RMB300 billion, by 2025 on sports and exercise-related services, residents can expect to see an increase of 50 more walking and jogging paths, 50 new football fields and even 200 more recreational sports centers built this year, plus more planned for down the road. The bureau says they will also upgrade the management of amateur leagues this year, with an emphasis on football leagues (we wonder why).
The ultimate goal of the project is to get at least 45 percent of people to take advantage of the new facilities and services, and in general, to get more people up and exercising on a regular basis.
Currently, Shanghai citizens have about 1.8 sqm of 'sports space' per person, but with that additional .6 a head, we'll be running circles around the city in no time.
